Stem Cell

By definition stem cells are cells that have the ability to divide for indefinite periods in culture and to give rise to specialized cells.Stem cells are best described in the context of human development. When fertilization occurs it creates a single cell that has the potential to form an entire organism.Currently, the study of stem cells is a strongly debated topic.Affecting these studies are the government position, the medical uses, and the possible pros and cons about this whole biological experience.
Stem cells are extraordinarily important in early human development. They can give rise to many types of cells that are necessary for fetal development. The three main types of stem cells are adult stem cells, multipotent stem cells and pluripotent stem cells. While adult stem cells hold real promise, there are some significant imitations as to what we may or may not be able to accomplish with them.Multipotent cells have a great potential for use in both research and also in the development of cell theories.Pluripotent stem cells, however, are capable of giving rise to mot tissues of an organism.
Currently during his presidency, President Bush "…forbids federally funded scientists from using anything except existing supplies"(www.cnn.com pg.1).Stem cells are used medically to regenerate healthy tissue to replace tissue damaged by disease or injury. Many scientists hope to use the transformational quality of these cells to create treatments for a variety of diseases. Perhaps the most far-fetching use of human stem cells is the generation of cells and tissue that could be used for cell theories.Stem cells are simulated to develop into specialized cells that offer a possibility of a renewable source or as replacement cells and tissues that have been damaged by disease. While this research shows extraordinary promise there is much to be done before we can realize these advancements.
