Mold

My topic was mold. Unlike mildew, mold grows when something gets old. Mold and mildew have some things in common: they can both grow on leather, and clothes but only mold can also grow on food too. I chose this topic because I wanted to see how long you could have food before it molds.
Penicillin and other substances are obtained from molds. A few molds are pathogenic. Some molds produce toxic chemicals called mycotoxins that can cause serious diseases. Mold consists of many cells that grow as branching threads called hyphae. Mold can be found wherever there is moisture, oxygen and a source of the few other chemicals they need. Some molds attach to grains such as wheat, oats, barley and corn. Hot spots of mold growth in the home include damp basements and closets, places where fresh food is stored, refrigerated drip trays, houseplants, air conditioners, humidifiers, garbage pails, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and old foam rubber pillows.

Molds produce microscopic cells that are called "spores" which are very tiny and spread easily through the air. Live spores can act like seeds, by forming new mold growths (colonies) when they find the right conditions. My question was: How long does it take to grow mold on different foods? I designed my experiment to test how long you could have certain foods before they start to mold. The materials that I used were: mashed potatoes, cheese, a strawberry, beef steak, a piece of bread, black electrical tape, a container, a pencil, a spiral (for my log), and a poster board (for my display). My controlled variable, was the time frame in which I would grow mold, and my manipulated variable was the different foods that I used for my experiment. Now I
