Cloning is a very controversial topic. It has been around for over a decade but is now gaining even more controversy because of the possibilities of human cloning. There are many different things that can be done as a result of cloning and some people feel that cloning is unethical.
In the controversial experiment discussed in this article scientists said they just wanted to take thefirst step toward determining if cloning works in humans like it does in cattle (Elmer-Dewitt, 66). They used embryos that were abnormal or deformed. If these embryos were going to die anyway then there should be no reason why they can't be used for scientific research.
What many people don't realize is that cloning can have many positive effects. Cloning would be very useful for couples who can not have children on their own. In-vitro fertilization does not work for all couples. If there was more than one embryo made by means of cloning then the couples chances of having a successful pregnancy would increase greatly.
Many people still feel that cloning is unethical and can lead to bad things in the future. However, it is not the "Jurassic Park-type cloning" (Elmer-Dewitt, 70) that many people think of. Cloning will not necessarily lead to unethical things such as "embryo factories" or selling babies. Cloning can however help people in the future. It could help people give birth to healthier children.
There are some bad sides to cloning. However, this could only happen if we allow cloning to go too far and get out of hand. For example, what if an infertility clinic showed couples who wanted to have children a catalog that is filled with children's pictures? This catalog would also list the child's personality traits and academic achievements. Something like this is not right and is unethical. However, we don't have to allow cloning to come to this.
Cloning poses no dangers to our society now….
