Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a disease in which cancer cells are found in breast tissue. Treatment will depend on the type of breast cancer and stage of the disease. So, two women with the same type of breast cancer may have different treatments because one is more advanced than the other.
There are 4 different treatments for breast cancer. There are surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and other treatments.
Surgery is the primary treatment for breast cancer. Its purpose is to remove as much of the cancer as possible. Modified or simple mastectomy are used more often than radical mastectomy, in other words it completely remove the breast tissue and muscle. The process may be accomplished by sending the radiation through the skin like an x-ray process, or by the temporary implantation of radioactive seeds into the cancerous tissue. It kills small areas of cancer that may not be seen during surgery. Radiation may also be done prior to surgery to shrink the tumor and relieve symptoms such as pain.

The oncologist will also determine how long and how often patient will have chemotherapy treatments. Chemotherapy can be administered intravenously in
