Animal Testing

Did you know that about 70,000 animals are killed every year due to animal testing? Well, it's true. A lot of people don't take it into consideration, but it's an issue that we really need to address. What is Animal testing exactly? It's when company after company removes animals from their natural habitats, and exposes them to dangerous chemicals.
There are many alternatives to animal testing, but for some reason, companies still continue to use it. Some alternatives are, using jack beans and vegetables, which are reliable to determine the toxicity of 5,000 materials. Also, some humans are even willing to donate their bodies to testing in the name of animals.
But, not all companies use animal testing. Today, about 550 companies have agreed not to use animal testing for any kind of testing or experimentation. Also, not only are these tests cruel, but they are unnecessary and unreliable as scientific evidence. However, alternatives to animals are reliable, cost less money, and take less time to complete.
The most common tests that companies use today are the Draize Eye Test, and Lethal Dose LD50. These tests are most commonly used on rabbits. The purpose of the test is to determine the dangers of the various chemicals, when they are purposely being inserted into the rabbits eye socket. This test is unreliable, because since the rabbit have no tear ducts, unlike humans, there is an inability to wash away the toxins. Further observations of the rabbit's eyes at intervals of 1, 24, 48, 72, and 168 hours reveal ulceration, corrosion, bleeding, and rupture of the eyeball. In an effort to escape the torture, rabbits have been known to break their backs causing even more pain.
Torturous animal tests as these, were the catalyst for an organization called People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals; Also known as PETA. The organization was founded in 1980, it started with 5 memb
