animal testing

Each year, scientists use 17-22 million animals for experimentation. Among these, are puppies, kittens, pigs, rabbits, horses and monkeys. These animals lie in steel and concrete pens. Few of these animals have access to food or water. The animals are so thin you can see their bones, and many of those bones are broken. They are covered in careless surgical cuts.
Everyday, all over the world, thousand of animals suffer and die. Scientists justify these acts by saying they're necessary to find cures for ailments people face each day. If this is so, why do we still suffer from cancer? Where is our miracle cure for AIDS? Surely 20 million animals lives' should yield some results.
I will agree that people have been helped through animal testing, but at what cost? Most animals don't even receive anesthesia in procedures, where the doctors intentionally kill the animals. In 1978, only three percent of the 5.2 million animals used in terminal operations were given anesthesia. No creature deserves to suffer through that pain. A man named Pete Singer once said, "All the arguments to prove man’s superiority cannot shatter this hard fact: In suffering, the animals are our equals.”
What do we do about it? Certain bills have been passed that are supposed to protect the animals, but don't do a very good job of that. One bill protected a few selected animals but not birds, rats or mice. People continue to work for bills that actually protect the animals. Many organizations such as the RSPCA go by the three R's. The three R's are Reduce, Replace, and Refine. They feel that if animals must be used in biomedical research, there is certain guidelines scientists should follow.
@ Reduce. The very smallest possible number of animals should be used in experiments.
B: Replace. Scientists should replace animals by any means necessary, such as computer programs and tissue culture.
